Why Our Work Matters

Black infants in Ohio are nearly three times more likely to die before their first birthday. Pregnant and postpartum women continue to face barriers related to access to care, mental health support, transportation, food insecurity, and stress.

These outcomes are preventable. Holistic, culturally centered, community-based support saves lives.
This is why our work matters.

Since 2018, The Mommy And Me Initiative has served over 3,000 families across Cuyahoga County through holistic maternal and infant health support.

Our programs address critical barriers related to social determinants of health, including access to prenatal and postpartum care, maternal mental health support, transportation, nutrition education, and essential baby supplies.

By meeting mothers where they are — in homes and communities — we help promote healthy pregnancies, positive birth outcomes, and stronger families.

Annual Nutrition & Community Garden Initiative

Each year, The Mommy And Me Initiative hosts a Nutrition Education & Community Garden Program designed to empower mothers and families through hands-on learning about food, health, and wellness.

Through interactive workshops and garden-based education, we teach families that “we are what we eat.” Participants learn how nutrition directly impacts maternal health, infant development, mental wellness, and long-term family well-being.

This initiative includes:

  • Nutrition education for pregnant and postpartum women
  • Hands-on community garden activities
  • Education on healthy food choices and meal planning
  • Conversations about food access, food insecurity, and cultural foods
  • Teaching families how to grow, prepare, and nourish their bodies with wholesome foods

By planting gardens and teaching nutrition, we promote sustainable wellness, healthy habits, and community empowerment — reinforcing the connection between nutrition, maternal health, and generational well-being.
